Matthew Kotchen is a professor of economics at the Yale School of the Environment and secondary appointments in the Yale School of Management and the Department of Economics. Kotchen has served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Environment and Energy at the U.S. Department of Treasury and member of the Environment Economics Advisory Committee of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He also served visiting chief of economist at the Environmental Defense Fund.
A recent study by Kotchen on indirect fossil fuel company subsidies was cited by the Biden Administration’s Made in America Tax Plan released by the Department of the Treasury in April. That study found that fossil fuel producers in the U.S. are directly benefiting from implicit subsidies on the order of $62 billion a year because of inefficient pricing that doesn’t properly account for the costs of damages to the environment, climate, and human health.
